On the Essential plan your domain stays with the company you bought it from (GoDaddy, OVH, IONOS, Namecheap and so on). Your site lives with us, so the domain needs two records that send visitors to it.
- Once your site is ready, we send you the exact records for it in the Support tab of your account. Each site has its own values: copy ours, not values from another guide.
- Sign in where you bought the domain and open its DNS settings (sometimes called "DNS zone", "DNS management" or "Advanced DNS").
- Add or change the record for the root of the domain (shown as @ or left blank) and the one for www, exactly as we sent them. Remove any older A or CNAME record on those same two names: two answers for one name send some visitors to the old site.
- Save, then tell us in the Support tab. We check from our side and the secure (https) certificate is issued by itself as soon as the records are seen.
What not to touch
- MX records: they decide where your email arrives. Changing the website records never requires touching them.
- TXT records you did not create: they often prove ownership to Google, Microsoft or your email provider.
- The domain's nameservers, unless we ask: changing them moves every record at once, email included.
Most changes are visible within an hour; some networks keep the old answer for up to a day or two. See how DNS changes spread.
